Transportation in the US Virgin Islands (during excursions)

Bus

During excursions we use so-called safari buses. The participants sit on long seats (with backrests) under a canopy.

Currency and credit cards

The currency of the US Virgin Islands is the US dollar. There are ATMs at almost all banks in the cities. Most stores and restaurants accept credit cards.

Price level

The price level in the US Virgin Islands is lower than in Sweden. A lunch is usually $ 15-20 and a dinner is $ 25-35. A bottle of wine costs 30-40 dollars and a beer at a bar or restaurant 6-8 dollars. Restaurant staff normally expect to get 15–20 percent in tips.

Tip

On our travels you come into contact with everyday life and local customs. There may be situations you do not like or are not used to, such as custom with tips. In many countries, the tips system is more organized than we as Swedes are used to and there is an expectation that local guides and drivers will receive a certain amount in tips during the journey, as the service industry’s salaries are often adjusted accordingly. We enter an amount in our travel program, so that you can take this into account when planning your trip. The price of the trip does not include the cost of tips as you decide how much you want to give during the trip. The system of tips can be said to be part of the culture you visit and which you should therefore follow and respect. We want to emphasize that it is of course voluntary to tip.

For cruises, other rules apply, see the special program for your trip.

Electricity

In the US Virgin Islands, 110 volts are used. Feel free to bring an adapter for American electrical appliances (connectors with two “thin spikes”).

Telephone and internet

To call the United States and thus the US Virgin Islands, dial 01 followed by the US number. If you are calling from the USA / US Virgin Islands to Sweden, dial 01146 followed by the Swedish number.

Hygiene

In hotels and larger restaurants, the toilets are modern / western class. Out in the city, however, you can count on going to so-called pedal toilets, and that there is a lack of toilet paper. The standard of public toilets or in the countryside can thus be relatively primitive. It may be wise to bring hand sanitizer (available at Swedish pharmacies, for example).

Smoking

During all flights and bus transport, there is an absolute ban on smoking. There is also a smoking ban in restaurants.

The three islands – St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John – has a tropical climate. This means that the islands are close to the Equator: the capital Charlotte Amalie is located e.g. 18 degrees north of the Equator. The short distance to the sun obviously contributes to the beautiful climate of the US Virgin Islands.
